Strengthening Seasons

by Carolyn Hope

Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:24-27)

Sometimes in life, you’ll find certain themes popping up again and again. Maybe you’ll keep getting opportunities to speak in front of people, something that terrifies you or used to cause you anxiety. Perhaps you’re good at managing finances, so your boss keeps giving you extra assignments to utilize your skills in that area. It could be that everywhere you go, people seem to be conveying the same message.

These are seasons where God wants to strengthen you in a particular area. Like an athlete training for the Olympics or a warrior training for battle, you are being built up into a greater capacity of your skills. God wants to make a stronger version of you.

If you find yourself in a place where you see recurring themes and messages, don’t brush them off or get frustrated. It can be easy to feel as if you’re being boxed in. Instead, recognize these times as a honing of your abilities, a workout for you in a specific area. Jesus is building up more strength in you so that you can run farther and longer in your race. As Paul said, “run with purpose in every step.” Let Jesus train you to enter into greater and deeper levels of strength.
